Editorial: BLM rule puts conservation on equal footing with oil and gas on public lands

The Bureau of Land Management is responsible for more public lands than any other agency in America, and yet, the bureaucracy has few tools to protect and conserve the land for future generations. In many ways, it makes sense that BLM’s mission for generations has been to make sure public lands are utilized for “multiple uses” especially public recreation. But the time has come to put conservation on equal footing with the private enterprises that have benefitted enormously from using and sometimes abusing our lands.BLM’s proposed Conservation and Landscape Health rule won’t dramatically change how our public lands are managed, but the new programs spelled out in the rule will open a door to conservation, especially of lands deemed important for wildlife habitat, corridors or other ecosystem needs. Public comment on the rule is open until June 20 on BLM’s website.Already the rule has met opposition from groups opposed to the idea of conservation getting equal footing with other poten...Deputies find bomb in car during Victorville traffic stop, SBSD says

A Florida couple faces dozens of charges for allegedly partaking in "a brutal pattern of child neglect, abuse and torture" against children in their home, detectives said. The Volusia Sheriff's Office said the situation began when Taylor B. Schaefer, 28, called deputies after getting a "gut feeling" that her boyfriend, 32-year-old Shawn M. Stone, was abusing her 5-year-old child. She called 911 after checking surveillance video and confirming the abuse, according to deputies.Sheriff Mike Chitwood said Stone punched, kicked, and beat the child with a mop handle for having an accident. He was initially arrested on a charge of aggravated child abuse, but as detectives investigated the situation, they learned that the abuse was worse than they initially thought. Capitol Police stopped a children’s choir from singing the national anthem. Why? I was sitting at a picnic table by a crackling fire pit at the Midtown Yacht Club, one of the Bend area’s lively neighborhood “tap yards.” There aren’t any yachts here, but there’s a lively food truck scene and a busy taphouse full of locals. As I enjoyed a plate of Middle Eastern food truck fare, sipped an IPA and surveyed the backyard party scene, I realized nearly everyone around me — adults, kids and even a couple of pooches— was clad in plaid. It was like a Grateful Dead show for the lumberjack set. I felt out of place in basic fleece, but a poster on the side of a food truck provided an explanation: It was a one-dayFlannel Fest, a fundraising celebration of lumberjack chic.Welcome to Oregon, partner.Best known for an abundance of outdoor activities — fly fishing, white-water rafting, biking, canoeing, camping and golf — Bend also boasts a plethora of art and cultural attractions, eateries and more brewpubs, breweries and beer gardens than humanly possible to visit. BERLIN (AP) — Strong winds have fanned flames at a wildfire on a German military training site that is known to contain large amounts of ammunition, causing it to double in size, officials said Monday. The fire near Jueterbog, south of Berlin, had been simmering for days as authorities scrambled to prevent it reaching surrounding villages.Firefighters have cleared large strips of land to contain the blaze but are avoiding the training grounds itself, where several explosions were heard Monday, officials said.Weeks of dry weather have increased the risk of wildfires in eastern Germany, with some regions on the second-highest alert level.Meteorologists say rain predicted for the coming days may lower the threat of wildfires again.SourceLatest news
