Column: Clear trends emerge as Chicago Bears wrap up draft weekend with a focus on height, speed and pedigree

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 15:58:38 GMT

We can learn plenty from what the Chicago Bears accomplished over the weekend — and what they left undone — as they wrapped up a 10-man draft class Saturday with a clear emphasis on traits: height, length and speed, preferably from Power Five conferences. The fact general manager Ryan Poles did not add a defensive end leads one to believe he will look to sign a veteran in the near future or wait for a player with a track record to be cast off by another team. Otherwise, the Bears project to line up Week 1 with DeMarcus Walker, Trevis Gipson, Dominique Robinson and Rasheem Green as their top defensive ends.Poles said it just happened to be how the board fell. The strength of the draft when their turn came Thursday at No. 10 — after trading the No. 9 pick used on Jalen Carter to the Philadelphia Eagles — was at offensive tackle. Defensive tackles Gervon Dexter and Zacch Pickens offered value Friday and hope to fill serious needs.Instead of aiming for an edge rus...

Nathan Eovaldi tosses complete game shutout as Yankees bats go silent in loss to Rangers

ARLINGTON – Former Yankees starter Nathan Eovaldi thoroughly dominated his former team Saturday, cruising through the injury-riddled New York lineup in a complete-game shutout for the Texas Rangers.Eovaldi only allowed three hits and struck out eight in the 2-0 win over the Yankees, who dropped their second straight in Arlington without star slugger Aaron Judge. The 33-year-old Eovaldi — who signed a two-year, $34 million contract with Texas in the offseason — entered with 5.20 ERA and hadn’t gone more than six innings in a game this year. But Eovaldi, who went 23-11 with the Yankees from 2015-16, returned to form Saturday, repeatedly hurling fastballs a few ticks faster than the 93.9 mph he averaged over his first five starts.Yankees starter Jhony Brito traded zeroes with Eovaldi over the first four innings but gave up a two-run home run to Ezequiel Duran in the fifth that proved to be the difference. Brito struck out five batters in five innings and fell to ...

Is Toronto seeing an increase in random attacks?

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 15:58:38 GMT

A Toronto man is speaking out after being threatened and assaulted by two strangers, hoping that by sharing his experience more people will be aware of their surroundings and avoid similar situations. Nick Lachance says he was on his way to get a haircut when a man on a scooter bumped into him in the area of Spadina Avenue and College Street recently. However, he tells CityNews that the initial bump quickly escalated into something more. Lachance said the man became aggressive and then began spitting on him before reaching into his pocket and pulling out what appeared to be a knife. He said he resisted giving it up and eventually managed to flee the scene without suffering any physical...
