The mental and physical tolls of the tennis season weigh on players by the US Open

Published Tue, 18 Feb 2025 09:41:50 GMT

NEW YORK (AP) — Novak Djokovic considers his mental state just as important as his physical condition when it comes to being prepared to play his best at age 36.“Mentally there is probably a lot more that I’m dealing with in my private life than was the case 10 years ago. But that’s the beauty of life. Things are evolving, moving on,” said Djokovic, who will try to take another step toward what would be a 24th Grand Slam title when he faces Ben Shelton in the U.S. Open semifinals Friday.“I just feel that there is always, I guess, an extra gear that you have inside of you and you can find when you dig deep to handle and manage energy levels, on and off the court,” Djokovic said, “if you’re really devoted to that and if you care about it, if you pay attention to that mental aspect as much as physical, of course.”By the time players arrive at Flushing Meadows for the last major tournament of a long season — one that began in late December and will carry on into November — the ailments ...

Published Tue, 18 Feb 2025 09:41:50 GMT

(CNN) — ¿Cristiano Ronaldo o Lionel Messi?

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — The Miami Hurricanes gave themselves a short window to celebrate a dominant 38-3 win over Miami (Ohio) in their season opener. They’ll quickly turned their attention to Texas A&M, which caused their first loss of the 2022 season and jumpstarted a three-game losing streak. “Already on it,’’ said safety Kamren Kinchens after the opener, snapping his fingers to represent how swiftly the Hurricanes moved on. “Real good team. We’re going to take in this win and enjoy it, but we know who we got next and we know what our mental state has got to be.’’The No. 23 Aggies will enter Saturday’s matchup with the Hurricanes coming off a 52-10 rout of New Mexico and hungry to capitalize off that momentum after a disappointing 2022 season.New Aggies starting quarterback Conner Weigman became the first Aggie in school history to pass for five touchdowns. Bayern refutes accusations of ‘sportswashing’ after replacing Qatar deal with Rwanda sponsorship

Published Tue, 18 Feb 2025 09:41:50 GMT

BERLIN (AP) — First Qatar, now Rwanda.Bayern Munich’s contentious sponsorship deals are leaving the club open to accusations of “sportswashing” and alienating many of its fans.Last month, the Bavarian powerhouse announced a new five-year partnership with Rwanda to develop soccer and boost tourism in the east African country. It replaced its previous sponsorship deal with Qatar, which had led to fan protests at games and unruly scenes at the club’s annual general meeting in 2021, when angry members booed club directors for refusing to discuss the arrangements.Bayern’s deal with Qatar Airways expired in June and was not renewed, reportedly because Qatar’s emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, faulted the club for not doing more to distance itself from the protests. Both Qatar and Rwanda have been accused of human rights abuses, but Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen denies the club is facilitating sportswashing to deflect attention from the alleged abuses.“I don’t see what we’re doing i...

Police have arrested a woman after, they said, she jumped into Biscayne Bay with a toddler in her arms and no clothes on. The incident happened in the area of 600 Brickell Key Drive, Thursday morning. According to City of Miami Police, the woman, identified as 27-year-old Natalia Marina, took her clothes off and jumped into the water with her 3-year-old nephew. Cellphone video showed Marina in the water as police in boats attempted to bring them on board. After struggling with officers, Marina and the child were both rescued by officers. The two were then taken to the hospital to be checked out. “Shortly after 8:30 this morning, officers responded to 609 Brickell to a criminal mischief call where there was a young lady that was causing some sort of damage, breaking things inside a building,” said Miami Police Capt. Freddie Cruz. “Once the officers got there, they made contact with her and she actually began swishing the officers away, taking off her clothes and, wit...
