Credit the Vikings for getting the big stop when they needed it on Sunday afternoon at U.S. Bank Stadium. After getting pulverized by star quarterback Justin Herbert and the Los Angeles Chargers all day long, the defense stepped up and forced a turnover on downs in the final minutes of the game. That group did its job when it needed to.That gave quarterback Kirk Cousins and the offense the ball with a chance to win the game. They couldn’t do it.After converting for a crucial first down in the final seconds, Cousins tried to fit a ball into tight end T.J. Hockenson in the Chargers’ end zone. It got tipped into the air, and of course, intercepted as the Vikings suffered a heartbreaking 28-24 loss to the Chargers. They are now 0-3, with each of those losses coming in games decided by a single possession. On their opening drive of the game, the Vikings pounded the rock with Mattison five straight times, committing to the run game like they promised they would. Broncos wide receiver Courtland Sutton was a co-star in Denver’s horrific 70-20 loss to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. But his role in one of the worst defeats in league history painted a good picture of how bad of a day it was.Denver was already down 42-13 with 5:23 left in the third quarter, and desperately needed something to prevent the scoreboard from entering historically bad territory. That’s when quarterback Russell Wilson stepped into the pocket and threw to Sutton on a crossing route. The veteran wideout ran 29 yards down the sideline before Dolphins safety Jevon Holland punched the ball out of Sutton’s right arm and cornerback Kader Kohou recovered. It was Sutton’s second fumble of the day. Throw in a dropped touchdown pass in the back of the end zone, and the positives of an eight-catch, 91-yard performance quickly faded into the background.“Unacceptable,” Sutton said. “When carrying the ball, we have everyone’s dreams, goals and aspirations. I fumbled the ball...1 dead, 1 hospitalized in fatal Denver crash Sunday afternoon

More than 500 dialysis workers across California are expected to go on strike this week over allegedly unfair labor practices at Satellite Healthcare and Fresenius Kidney Care clinics.Ninety-nine percent of workers voted to strike on Sept. 25 and 26 at clinics in cities like San Jose, Gilroy and Brentwood, citing concerns over management putting both dialysis clinic staff and patients at risk in order to increase profits, according to a press release from SEIU-United Healthcare Workers West. Workers are also expected to strike at locations in Southern California.“We spend more time with our patients and coworkers than our own families, and they know we are chronically understaffed and underpaid,” Manny Gonzalez, a certified hemodialysis technician at Fresenius Kidney Care Juniper Fontana said in a statement. “Fresenius is trying to keep us silent because they’re afraid of us standing together, and they know that our patients are supporting us in this fight.”The union alleged that in...Quiet Berkeley neighborhood reels after stabbing spree

In a quiet Berkeley Hills neighborhood on Sunday morning, a strange sense of calm had descended on a pair of streets where, just a day prior, two women and a man were stabbed, one fatally.Homeowners walked their dogs around the block. A family with small children played in the front yard. An older woman watered her plants. On the surface, it was a morning like many others in the wooded enclave just a few blocks from Tilden Park. But for residents who knew the woman who died and her family, things felt far from normal.“I just don’t understand how this could ever happen,” said Mardi Sicular, the victim’s nextdoor neighbor on Overlook Road. “We’re just absolutely devastated. It’s so final.”Booking records show Berkeley police have a person in custody identified as Jonah Jeremiah Roper, an unemployed 36-year-old man. Roper, who has an extensive criminal record, is facing charges of attempted murder, elder abuse, vehicle theft, and child abuse. Police as of Sunday afternoon still had not...Herbert, Chargers keep Vikings winless, pulling out a 28-24 victory sealed by late pick in end zone

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings again lacked the late-game touch that was so golden for them last season.Justin Herbert had the firm grip and the let-it-rip approach for the Los Angeles Chargers all game long.Herbert passed for 405 yards and three touchdowns and the Chargers kept Kirk Cousins out of the end zone twice in the last three minutes to preserve a wild 28-24 victory over the winless Vikings on Sunday.“There were just so many things in that game that happened that tested the patience of our team, the connection of our team,” coach Brandon Staley said. “All three phases just hung tough.”Kenneth Murray Jr. made the game-sealing interception in the end zone with 7 seconds left, snagging a ball that deflected off the chest of diving tight end T.J. Hockenson. On Minnesota’s previous possession, Michael Davis knocked down Cousins’ fourth-down throw to Justin Jefferson at the goal line.“It was a hard-fought win,” Herbert said. “Certainly not the way we d...Jared Goff throws and runs for TDs, helping the Lions bounce back with a 20-6 win over Falcons

DETROIT (AP) — Jared Goff faked a handoff, dropped back and lofted a pass to a stunningly open Sam LaPorta.Goff’s tiebreaking 45-yard touchdown pass to LaPorta early in the second quarter sent Detroit to a 20-6 victory over Atlanta Falcons on Sunday in a rebound performance for the Lions.“We had that play written up all week,” Goff said.Atlanta, somehow, seemed to miss LaPorta on the scouting report. The former Iowa star, drafted No. 34 overall, was the first NFL tight end to catch five passes in each of his first two games. He surpassed that production with eight receptions for 84 yards and his first score against the Falcons.LaPorta has 18 catches, the most by an NFL tight end through three games. The previous record was 17 receptions for Keith Jackson in 1988 for Philadelphia at the start of his three-time All-Pro career.“He’s a stud,” Goff said. “He has a great feel for the game. Great hands, obviously, and great speed.“The sky is the limit and hopefully I’ll play wit...Atlanta Falcons baffled by offensive collapse in 20-6 loss to Detroit Lions

DETROIT (AP) — The Atlanta Falcons were confident they would be able to move the ball on the Detroit Lions. After a 20-6 loss, they still felt the same way.“It’s never a matter of another team beating you rather than you beating yourself,” Falcons quarterback Desmond Ridder said. “There are a lot of times in our situation where we beat ourselves and don’t play to our full potential.”The Falcons averaged 24.5 points in season-opening wins against Carolina and Green Bay, thanks to 352 yards passing for Ridder and 303 yards from running backs Bijan Robinson and Tyler Allgeier.None of that worked on Sunday at Ford Field.Ridder was 21 for 38 for 201 yards and took seven sacks for 62 yards. Robinson and Allgeier only managed 45 yards on 17 carries, and no one got into the end zone.“Give the Lions credit, because they took us out of our offensive rhythm and we never got it back,” Falcons coach Arthur Smith said. “They forced us to take a lot of negative plays early in drives, wh...Latest news
