When San Jose’s 105th Veterans Day celebration takes place downtown Saturday, it’ll include all the familiar staples we associate with the event: a ceremony honoring those who serve in our armed forces and a parade filled with politicians waving from convertibles, veterans’ groups, marching bands, fleets of both classic cars and military vehicles and even a flyover from the Air National Guard Rescue Wing out of Moffett Field. But there’ll also be an “only in Silicon Valley” aspect to this year’s parade: The grand marshal isn’t a U.S. Army general or Navy admiral. It’s Douglas A. Beck, a former vice president at Apple for 14 years who now serves as the director of the Defense Innovation Unit, where he oversees the Department of Defense’s adoption of commercial technology. Of course, he’s also veteran, a decorated captain in the U.S. Navy Reserve who served in Iraq and Afghanistan in 2006-07 during his 26 years of milita...With latest acquisition, San Jose Sharks GM hints at rebuild’s timeline

SAN JOSE – The San Jose Sharks used 10 defensemen during the 2021-2022 season, the year before Mike Grier took over as the team’s general manager.Three are left in the organization, with Grier replacing the others in the last year with a handful of young blueliners. The new guys are all between 21 and 23 years old, and one doesn’t need to squint too hard to see they could form the nucleus of the Sharks’ defense corps later this decade.“You can kind of just tell from the age group of players that (Grier) is trying to accumulate or bring in that are in their early 20s,” Sharks center Nico Sturm said. “Probably (defensemen) hit their prime probably in their late 20s or early 30s. So, there’s a timeline further ahead.”The latest to be added by Grier is Calen Addison, who will be in the Sharks’ lineup Thursday when they play the Edmonton Oilers at SAP Center. Addison, 23, was acquired from the Minnesota Wild on Wednesday for winger Adam Raska and a 2026 fifth-round draft pick.Again...'Armed and dangerous': Pittsburg police search for homicide suspect

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Living dangerously has become a habit lately for No. 20 Tulane. The Green Wave’s last three victories have come by 12 points combined despite being double-digit favorites in each game. Those results aren’t necessarily ideal for a team trying to defend its American Athletic Conference title and return to a second straight major New Year’s Day bowl game. But it was hardly cause for panic as the Tulane (8-1, 5-0 AAC, No. 23 CFP) prepared to host struggling, but desperate, Tulsa (3-6, 1-4) on Saturday.“We’d like to play our very best,” Tulane coach Willie Fritz said. “But, like I told our guys, a win is big, especially at this time of year, and we’ll take it.“It’s a hell of a lot better than a pretty loss,” Fritz added.Relatively speaking, Tulane’s football program is in the midst of a golden era. On Wednesday, the Vatican made public a sharply contrasting statement, saying it’s permissible, under certain circumstances, for trans people to be baptized as Catholics and serve as godparents.“It is a major step for trans inclusion … it is big and good news,” said Francis DeBernardo, executive director of Maryland-based New Ways Ministry, which advocates for greater LGBTQ acceptance in the church. The document was signed Oct. 21 by Pope Francis and Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández, who heads the Vatican’s Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith. It was posted Wednesday on that office’s website. If it did not cause scandal or “disorientation” among other Catholics, a transgender person “may receive baptism under the same conditions as other faithful,” the document said.Similarly, the document said trans adults — even if...Latest news
